Disney's live-action "Beauty and the Beast" movie opened with an estimated $170 million in USA ticket sales, setting a new mark for family movies. Its cumulative total now stands at $42.6 million.

The live action update of the 1991 animated classic scored the second biggest March debut on a global basis, coming in behind "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice's" $424.1 million launch. It topped the previous March opening weekend record of 166 million USA dollars set by "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice" past year and also the seventh largest opening weekend ever.

This will make Beauty And The Beast's opening weekend either the sixth or seventh all-time most successful, depending on whether or not it will surpass Iron Man 3's figure of $174.1 million. It's also the best opening weekend of 2017 so far. The franchise includes 2010's "Alice in Wonderland", 2014's "Maleficent", 2015's "Cinderella", and last year's "The Jungle Book". The "Tale as Old as Time" is likely to become the fifth highest grossing three-day opening of all-time, and the highest grossing three-day opening weekend for a PG-rated movie ever.

Horror flick The Belko Project opened in seventh place with just $4 million, but that number isn't devastating against its modest $5 million production budget.

Other live action remakes in development at Disney: "Dumbo", "The Lion King", "Aladdin", "Mulan" and "Pinocchio".
