The decision to pick Adityanath as chief minister was sealed at a meeting between BJP chief Amit Shah and RSS' second-in-command Bhaiyyaji Joshi in Mumbai last week.

A week after BJP's historic mandate in Uttar Pradesh elections, the newly elected legislators on Saturday picked five-time Lok Sabha MP from Gorakhpur Yogi Adityanath as their legislature party leader, paving way for his appointment as the next chief minister of the state.

Sinha has a proven administrative record by serving in two Union Ministries - MoS (Independent Charge) of Communications and MoS for Railways. And yet, tongues started wagging when he performed a ceremony on Saturday morning.

Adityanath will take over as the 32nd chief minister of the state.

In the recently-concluded Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, the party secured 312 seats in a 403-member house, while its allies Apna Dal (Soneylal) and Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party got nine and four seats, respectively. Congress leader Amarinder Sindh, to whom the success is being attributed, will be sworn in as the new chief minister of Punjab. Interestingly elections in all these constituencies were held because BJP MLAs had become MPs. The mahant of Gorakhnath Math was beaming when returned to Lucknow with Maurya.

The Shah-Modi duo are learnt to have conveyed their displeasure "at this public display of indiscipline and disregard" after which both Mathur and Maurya left for Lucknow.

A party MP said that the win proved a huge number of Scheduled Castes and extremely backward communities had supported the BJP.

BJP's firebrand leader Adityanath, who was not even in the race until Friday, emerged as the lead contender. Naidu said the names being circulated by the media were only speculation.

Adityanath has also compared Shah Rukh Khan to the Pakistani terrorist Hafiz Saeed, saying that "Shah Rukh Khan should remember that majority population of the Country made him the Star, and if they boycot his films, he will also have to wander on streets". The party " s state unit chief Keshav Prasad Maurya is also a contender, but no surprise if the final choice falls on a relatively lesser- known leader.

Union minister M Venkaiah Naidu and national general-secretary Bhupinder Yadav will most likely inform the MLAs about the BJP leadership " s choice at the meeting and seek the MLAs' endorsement. "The formation of the new government in Uttar Pradesh is happening soon".
