Cornell was on tour and performed Wednesday night in Detroit with Soundgarden.

In 1984, Chris formed the band Soundgarden, which was influential in the 1990s grunge movement.

"It was really cool", Morello said of that performance. They need to be kind of real and they need to have a beginning, middle and an end.

Cornell was the father of three children: Toni and Christopher - with whom he shared with Karayiannis - and Lillian Jean from his previous marriage to manager Susan Silver. "That was the toughest time in my life", he told Rolling Stone.

Soundgarden predated both grunge pioneers Nirvana and Pearl Jam, but it wasn't an overnight success.

"There's something about Seattle, it's always been a hard rock town, too".

The band broke up in 1997 but later reformed.

Cornell helped form the rock supergroup Audioslave with members of Rage Against the Machine. Zac Brown Band have also been known to include one of Cornell's songs in their live shows.

The Soundgarden singer was 52.
