The employees were Marlina Medrano, a nurse, and 48-year-old Cindy Krantz, a nurse's aide.

Spokeswoman Jill Del Greco, of the OH attorney general's office, said investigators had more interviews planned and learning more about the connection between Hartless and Medrano is part of their efforts.

Connie Long lives across the street from Hartless' parents' home, where he often stayed in Utica.

"We don't know the cause or the objective or what drove this individual to do this", Thorp said, adding that was being investigated. Utica is about 26 miles (41 kilometers) north of Kirkersville.

When authorities entered the nursing home, they found that two female employees had been shot and killed.

A recent shooting in Kirkersville, Ohio, claimed the lives of three people, including a police chief, and you probably didn't hear much about it in the news because the perpetrator was a white male.

The gunman was in a wooded area behind the nursing home when he encountered two passers-by, whom he temporarily took hostage. The chief's last radio communication said he had the man in sight.

Thorp said authorities believe a fourth body is that of the shooter, but the shooter's motive and identification are not yet known. The hostages escaped unharmed.

Thorp says Pine Kirk Care Center is a secure facility and investigators don't know how the gunman got in. He said she would give neighborhood children ice cream and round them up to take them to Sunday school.

"It was in that vicinity, very close to that, that the chief of police was in fact shot and was killed", DeWine said.

There were reports that nursing home employees barricaded themselves inside rooms in the nursing home. The gunman was later found dead.

A gunman on Friday shot and killed a central OH village's police chief - a father of six who'd been on the job just a few weeks - in an alley before entering a nursing home and killing two female employees, police said.

Licking County Sheriff Randy Thorp says the suspected gunman was also found dead Friday.

Kirkersville Police Chief Steven Eric Disario, 36, was responding to a report about a man in a street with a firearm when he saw the gunman in an alley behind Pine Kirk Care Center nursing home shortly before 8 a.m., Thorp said. He had been police chief for three weeks.

Thorp said he assumes [Chief] Disario had engaged the suspect. He was the father of six, with a seventh child on the way.
