Kumble was given a 12-month contract by BCCI previous year which will end after the ICC Champions Trophy next month. Apparently, Sehwag was approached by a top BCCI official during the Indian Premier League who asked him to apply for the job.

If the media reports are to be believed, the board is not happy with the current head coach Kumble following which he is not being given an extension. A BCCI official told TOI the same bunch of people would be pointing fingers towards the board if the new coach appointment process was not followed.

"We have contacted Sehwag during the IPL and asked him to consider applying for the job of India coach. We don't want a scenario where the players and the coach are not on the same page", a BCCI insider revealed.

Goel had stated earlier that no Pakistan sports persons will be allowed to play in India or vice versa except for when it is in a neutral venue and a multilateral tournament, such as the ICC Champions Trophy in which India play Pakistan in their opener on June 4.

The next contract is likely to run until the 2019 World Cup.

While the Indian cricket team is busy preparing in England ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy which begins next month, the BCCI have courted controversy with their hunt for a new head coach despite Anil Kumble's incredible record in his first year at the helm.

Also, Sehwag has recently played the role of a mentor with Kings XI Punjab, who finished fifth in the IPL 10.

The cash-strapped PCB's finances heavily depend on a series with India which would mean a financial windfall for the nation, where no worldwide cricketing activity has taken place since terrorist attack on Sri Lankan cricket team.

Another bone of contention is the reports that Kumble had allegedly demanded to be present at all selection committee meetings along with the skipper so that he could analyse the strengths and weaknesses of the players being discussed and to see how well in tandem the thought process is with the selection committee and the team management. One year coaching tenure is a ludicrous thing to do.

He will be interviewed by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) members Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and V.V.S. Laxman, and asked to make a presentation. As of now, we can only hope that all goes well and Kumble is retained as the coach of the side.
