Chaos at Florida Airport: Passengers Brawl After Spirit Airlines Cancels Flights

Lauderdale Airport turned into a fight club on May 8, when Spirit Airlines canceled 11 flights at the same time.

"All of a sudden, one particular flight got canceled, and a mob ensued up here at the front counter, in front of everyone else who had been waiting in line", a passenger told WSVN.

Desmond Waul, 22, Janice Waul, 24, and Devante Garrett, 22, were arrested Monday night in connection with the fight and face charges of inciting or encouraging a riot, disorderly conduct, resisting an officer, and trespassing after a warning, according to a Broward Sheriff's Office police report.

"We are hopeful that we can put this moment behind us and get back to serving our customers", Spirit Airlines spokesman Paul Berry said in a statement.

The Air Line Pilots Association International representing Spirit's almost 1,600-member pilot contingent denied their involvement in any job action but promised to help restore order to airline operations. The low-priced carrier says it has filed a lawsuit against the pilot's association over an "unlawful job action".

ALPA has denied the allegations, and said that Spirit's suit is "unwarranted and counterproductive legal action".

CNN notes that just on Sunday, the airline had to cancel 81 flights, "comprising 17% of the carrier's scheduled flights for the day".

Deputies arrested three people from NY at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport Monday, charging them with inciting a riot, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and trespassing.

Passengers have also reported that they witnessed police brutality.

"This is clearly unlawful activity under the Railway Labor Act, which governs labor relations in the airline industry", Berry added in the statement. Passengers were livid that nine flights had been canceled, leaving 500 stuck in Ft. In the lawsuit, Spirit said it has cancelled around 300 flights impacting over 20,000 customers in the last seven days.
