The latest development in the Trump investigation was published Friday while the president was traveling to Saudi Arabia on the first leg of his first trip overseas as president - a series of diplomatic visits that the White House hopes will shift attention away from the political firestorm triggered by the dismissal last week of former FBI Director James Comey.

CNN's source added that it's still unclear whether Trump's attempts to influence Comey amounted to obstruction of justice.

Despite reports of a "significant person of interest" and an intensifying investigation, those watching developments closely in Washington say there is no indication yet that the filing of any criminal charges is imminent, or even likely. On Wednesday, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Comey's predecessor, Robert Mueller, to serve as special counsel overseeing the Russian Federation probe.

Later, however, Trump said that he had already made the decision to fire Comey before getting Sessions' and Rosenstein's input.

Lavrov met with Trump at the White House on May 10, the day after the President fired Comey.

"I am hopeful that he will clarify for the American people recent events that have been broadly reported in the media", Burr said in the statement.

On Friday, the reportedNew York Times Trump told top Russian officials in the Oval Office that Comey was a "nut job" and terminating him had taken off the "great pressure because of Russia".

In light of these revelations and Comey's firing, Rosenstein appointed former Federal Bureau of Investigation director Robert Mueller as special counsel to investigate ties between Trump's campaign and Russian Federation.

Mueller will have broad powers in his new role and the latitude to investigate anything related to the Trump campaign's ties to Russian Federation and potential collusion with Russian Federation to interfere in the 2016 election. The White House did not deny the claim.

A White House official said Trump and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson would attend the signing of a memorandum of intent on a package of defence equipment and services to bolster the security of the kingdom and the Gulf region in the face of Iranian threats.
