Matthew Miller, a former spokesman for the Department of Justice, said Comey fastidiously keeps evidence of potential wrongdoing to protect himself and the agency. He tells reporters that it's possible an announcement on James Comey's replacement could come before then.

Postscript: A few days before Election Day 2016, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who now serves as one of Trump's chief White House spokespersons, said on Twitter, "When you're attacking FBI agents because you're under criminal investigation, you're losing".

"I was going to fire Comey - my decision", Trump told NBC News' Lester Holt in an interview that aired Thursday. "And I hope he will be", Trump said.

Former FBI Director James Comey is "not worried" about President Trump's suggestion that conversations between the two of them could have been taped, CNN reported Friday.

Democratic lawmakers, and some Republicans, have publicly doubted the justification Trump gave for firing Comey - that he had not properly managed the investigation into Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and her e-mail practices.

Trump's comments appear to confirm multiple reports that his administration had been shocked at the widespread outrage over Comey's firing.

"Let's say I did it on January 20. that would have been the big story as opposed to the inauguration".

After that, the president said he had already chose to fire Comey and that he was going to do it regardless of whether or not Rosenstein recommended it.

Trump fired Comey on May 9, citing frustrations with the Federal Bureau of Investigation director's conduct.

"That is possible", said Trump, who is giving a commencement speech at Liberty University, in Lynchburg, Va. Rep. Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, quickly pressed the White House to turn over any related information to congressional leaders.

During a Thursday interview with NBC's Lester Holt, Trump said he made the decision to fire Comey on his own, and that he would have done it regardless of what Rosenstein recommended, adding that he had been thinking of "this Russian Federation thing with Trump" when he came to his decision to fire Comey.

Events are still unfolding and the president has committed acts that are impeachable. All I want is for Comey to be honest.
