It was his consistent display with the bat in IPL 2017, which might have prompted the BCCI to choose Karthik, who scored 361 runs in 14 matches for the Gujarat Lions.

Indian middle-order batsman Manish Pandey has been ruled out of next month's ICC Champions Trophy due to a side strain and will be replaced in the squad by wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik, the BCCI announced on Thursday.

Seasoned wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik was called as a replacement for the injured Pandey. Pandey last featured for India in the 2nd T20I against England in January earlier this year, which the hosts won by five runs.

Karthik, who has not played an ODI for India since 2014 has been exceptional in this year's IPL.

Suresh Raina, Rishabh Pant, Kuldeep Yadav and Shardul Thakur were the others the reserves list, just in case those in the squad broke down at the end of a busy season.

Karthik will be in the India Cricket Team for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy.

It is a blow for Virat Kohli's India too as Pandey was in form and seemed to be the understudy to Kedar Jadhav. He has amassed 361 runs at an impressive average of 36 and a great strike rate of almost 140.

The tournament will start from June 1, with India starting its campaign on June 4 against arch-rival Pakistan. They then take on Sri Lanka on June 8 before playing their final group game against South Africa on June 11.
