Rain in the Spanish capital meant the roof on the Manolo Santana court was closed for the game, slowing down Lopez's powerful serve to the advantage of the Serb, who recently split from his long-term coach Marian Vajda.

"I'm still finding my way to that consistency level and quality of tennis that I'm looking for", Djokovic said.

"I didn't help myself find a way into the match to start playing better".

She went toe to toe with her higher-ranked opponent early in the match before Halep broke in the fifth and the seventh games and then comfortably served out the first set.

It was Djokovic, who had dominated on the clay previous year as he went on to win the Roland Garros title.

"I was very close to losing it, as well". Kyrgios got broken at love in game 3 and it was clear that he is not in the match anymore, just waiting for everything to be over.

It was a good start for both players in the first 3 games, just like everybody was hoping for, and Nick looked determined to fight until the final point (he blasted a 172 km/h forehand victor in game 3).

"I did my work in the end of the match".

The 14-time Grand Slam champion now faces Nick Kyrgios in the third round.

Kyrgios did what his compatriot Bernard Tomic on Tuesday could not - down American Ryan Harrison.

He will next play against sixth-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan, who defeated David Ferrer 6-4, 6-3 to deny the Spaniard his 700th career win.

Djokovic made the last four after Nishikori withdrew from their match with a wrist injury.

Lopez advanced with a 6-3 3-6 7-6 (7-3) win over Frenchman Gilles Simon.

Djokovic leads 26-23 in head-to-head meetings over Nadal and the Serb has beaten the Spaniard on the red dirt seven times in their last 10 meetings, including their quarter-final meeting at last year's Rome Masters.

Halep will face in-form Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic or Svetlana Kuznetsova in Saturday's final.

Murray won his only title of the year in Dubai and had started the clay season trying to regain his form following a right elbow injury that kept him out of the Miami Open and the Davis Cup quarterfinals.

"In the end I played as I had dreamed", said Coric.

"I understand people are trying to speculate and create a list because I was saying I would like to have someone who was kind of in my shoes before".

"There are not too many of those kind of champions in the history of the sport". I didn't really train for a week and a half, so to even come here and win a couple rounds... "I can't talk more than that".
