Senior Commission officials, including Deputy Election Commissioners Umesh Sinha and Vijay Dev, had appeared before the committee on Friday to speak on EVMs, paper trail machines and electoral reforms. This will be done in order to bring the EVMs back here from that particular segment and give parties a chance to show that machines were tampered with. At the EVM challenge event, the parties, which have alleged that the EVMs used during the recent Assembly elections were tampered with, will be invited to prove the allegations.

Even the Software Programme Code of these EVMs is written in-house, by these two companies, not outsourced, and subjected to security procedures at factory level to maintain the highest levels of integrity, officials said. The Election Commission India had also announced that henceforth, VVPATs would be used in all the Assembly and General elections.

As per an Election Commission announcement, the live demonstration of the functioning of the EVMs and VVPATs will be followed by a press conference.

Representatives of the Bahujan Samaj Party, Congress, Aam Admi Party, and Trinamool Congress had raised concerns over EVMs at the all-party meeting.

Over the last 23 years, the commission has successfully conducted 107 Assembly and three Lok Sabha elections using EVMs, officials told the panel. The team will be given the EVMs to demonstrate their claim in front of the four-member panel.

It had also announced that all future elections will be held using VVPAT (Voter-verifiable paper audit trail).

Some parties, however, said the EVMs could not be trusted and the EC should revert to the old ballot paper system, where people inked their choices on a sheet of paper.
