Emma Watson also took home best actor in a movie honors -- the first acting award ever that celebrated performance free of any gender distinctions.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Emma Watson had high praise for MTV's move to remove gender qualifiers for its Movie and TV Awards.

This year's MTV Movie and TV Awards was special, because for the first time ever, MTV made a decision to honour the incredible world of television as well.

Emma Watson's role in the live-action Disney movie "Beauty and the Beast" made the British actress the victor of the special award.

The MTV Movie and TV Awards 2017 kicked off on Sunday, May 7 (Monday, May 8, in Manila) with a spoof of Disney's Beauty and the Beast.

Watson made history when she accepted the Best Actor accolade for film, while fellow Brit Millie Bobby Brown picked up the TV equivalent. Back in 2011, the Grammy Awards scrapped the male and female categories.

Sanders said: "This award is bigger than Jharrel and I. This represents more than a kiss".

After landing her big break in the Harry Potter franchise all those years ago, Emma was always a sweet girl, if a little goofy as teenage girls always seem to be, but she has grown into a attractive, strong and influential young woman who is a good role model for our children.

This year marked the first time awards were handed out for TV shows during the ceremony and several small screen hits were recognised during the telecast.

"I was like, 'Oh my goodness, I love you.' I'm not very good at this stuff".

"I want to thank my family. you give me light every day".

Former Harry Potter actress Emma Watson created history as she won the first MTV Award that did not separate nominees based on gender.

In an Instagram video shared after the ceremony, she thanked her fans and poked a little fun at herself for crying nearly uncontrollably during her acceptance speech.

"Thank you for educating me in such an inclusive, patient and loving way", she said, before walking over to Dillon and embracing the fellow actor.

The award was presented by Asia Kate Dillon, who identifies as non binary. The arrival of Eleven, who turns up in the town unsure of where she's come from and unable to speak much at all, adds another piece to the puzzle.
