Backstreet Boys star Nick Carter is heartbroken as his father Robert Carter is no more.

While there was speculation surrounding Aaron's tweet, Nick actually just sadly confirmed the news on social media. Details of the cause of his death are yet to emerge.

Aaron also shared a photo of him and his dad on Instagram.

In another post, Aaron wrote: "I'm gonna miss you forever poppa smurf you were the coolest man ever. You were never human to me, you were always my real life superhero". It was Nick, 37, who formally broke the news-also on Twitter-on Wednesday.

Bob Carter had complained about arm twitches and chest pains before he went to bed on the Tuesday night, and it is thought he suffered a heart attack during the night.

Aaron had recently tweeted about traveling to visit his family, hinting that something may have been wrong. "#RIP DADDY I Love You", Aaron tweeted.

Aaron's older brother Nick released a statement on Twitter and has since kept quiet on the matter.

She, Nick, Aaron, Bob, and her two other siblings - Angel, 29, and Bobbie Jean, 35 - were featured on the family's 2006 reality show House of Carters. The Backstreet Boy asked for "our privacy be respected at this hard time" as the family "learn [s] more about the cause of death, and begin the grieving process". "This is the last pic I have my dad", he wrote.

Bob's death is the second tragedy to hit the family in recent years - Leslie died of a drug overdose at the age of 25 in 2012. The show ran for only one 8-episode season.
