The box office has a new king - and the total take-home from opening weekend is HUGE! This makes it the fifth biggest opening for a Marvel Cinematic Universe film, following only The Avengers and its sequel, Captain America: Winter Soldier, and Iron Man 3. This seems to suggest the third movie in the series will likely arrive in 2020. Even so, the events happening in this galaxy are considered to be contemporary with what is happening in the Marvel films, at least up until the first film, which was released in 2014.

In fourth was Pantelion s "How to be a Latin Lover", a comedy starring Salma Hayek, Rob Lowe, Kristen Bell and Mexican actor Eugenio Derbez, with $5.3 million in ticket sales. The film has now earned a whopping 427.6 million USA dollars at the global box office through Sunday, according to studio figures collected by comScore.

"The strength of the brand is a license to take risks", Hollis said, noting that the "Guardians" films are the ideal counter to any notion of superhero movie fatigue. In March, the mouse house's Beauty and the Beast live action adaptation began its box office run with $174.7 million and eventually grossed $1 billion worldwide. Where available, the latest worldwide numbers also are included.

#Boxoffice results away from Guardians 2 pale in comparison.

"The Fate of the Furious", $8.5 million ($30.1 million international).

Third place belonged to The Boss Baby, which milked $6.2 million from North American theaters in its sixth weekend.

At the domestic box office, Beauty and the Beast has pulled in $487 million. That is quite an impressive number when compared with how the first film in the Marvel franchise debuted at $98 million.

Gifted ($2.1 million), Going in Style ($1.9 million) and Smurfs: The Lost Village ($1.8 million) round out the rest of the top 10.

"Baahubali 2: The Conclusion", $43.9 million.
