Irving's 42 points power Cavs past Celtics

If you scour the internet and social media these days, articles will appear suggesting that the Boston Celtics should trade All-Star point guard Isaiah Thomas.

"King" James surpassed National Basketball Association icon Michael Jordan as the league's all-time leading playoff scorer.

But the Cavs found their footing late in the half and were able to stay within striking distance - trailing by only 10 at intermission. But all that talk surrounding Thomas was vanquished when Kyrie Irving and the Cavaliers responded in style during Game 4. "For me, that was driving to the basket and putting up pull-back jumpers". "Then Terry Pluto says the 'Big Three" came through.

Nothing was going to keeping Irving out.

"I'm just happy and blessed that when I made a decision to come back that I was able to help him blossom, I guess, because he gets to play in games that he's always been built for".

"They can not. We can not go to Boston 2-2 and then it becomes nearly an even series".

The Celtics made some noise near the end of the first half, but Irving scored Cleveland's first 11 points in the opening 3:18 of the second half. Also, the Cavs have won outright six of their last 10 postseason games when they were road underdogs. "We want to give our home crowd a better outing than we put out the past two games". "That's what I always think, [with] people of his stature or people like him, you've got to play confident the whole night and play aggressive".

Meanwhile, the Celtics' leading scorer after the injured Thomas, Avery Bradley, is averaging just 16.4 points this postseason.

Cue the insane speculation that the Celtics are better off without their mini-leader, and things began to look up for the fans in green.

Boston led by as many as 16 points in Game 4 and once again had their bench out score the Cavaliers' bench by a large margin.

LeBron James and the defending champion Cleveland Cavaliers are headed back to the NBA Finals.

"They had multiple people come in and talk to me about what's more important", Thomas said Friday, a day after the Celtics were eliminated by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Kyrie Irving led Cleveland with 42 points as they take a commanding 3-1 series lead.

By the Numbers - 24.5, 12.8 ...

Cleveland jumped to a quick 14-5 lead and were up by 43-27 after the first quarter - posting a franchise record for points in a quarter of a playoff game.

"I think first of all I wear the number (23) because of Mike", he told reporters after finishing the game with 35 points to take his total to 5,995 points.

The Cavs shot 31.6 percent and scored just 19 points in the first period. "He did that. And we put him in some good situations, iso, where he's one of the best in the league, and he produced for us".

By the third quarter, the Cavs were just toying with Boston, pulling out their most absurd finishing moves.

Despite the challenge, the Cavs lead the Eastern Conference finals 3-1 and can close out the series with a Game 5 win at TD Garden on Thursday.
