James Comey's farewell letter to his FBI colleagues

Democrats accused the Republican president of firing Comey to try to undermine the FBI's probe into Russia's alleged efforts to meddle in the 2016 election and possible collusion with members of the Trump campaign, and demanded an independent investigation.

But Shollenberger believes Trump's firing of Comey had nothing to do with his handling of the probe.

One reason the administration underestimated the explosive fallout, several people close to the White House said, because few seasoned political hands were closely involved in the decision.

When and how did Trump really decide to remove Comey?

Trump, in a letter to Comey dated Tuesday, contended that the director had told him "three times" that he was not personally under investigation. "Other staffers in the West Wing found out about the Federal Bureau of Investigation director's firing when their cellphones buzzed with news alerts".

Clinton has partially blamed her loss on Comey's disclosure to Congress less than two weeks before Election Day that the email investigation would be revisited.

In his Tuesday letter dismissing Comey, Trump wrote: "I greatly appreciate you informing me, on three separate occasions, that I am not under investigation".

Collier thinks Democrats need to win the House in order to obtain an objective investigation.

Tapper's source, however, says there are two other reasons that explain why Trump fired Comey, CNN reported.

"His dismissal further confuses an already hard investigation by the committee", Burr said. "Schumer and other Democrats said they'd lost confidence in Mr. Comey", said Sen.

Sanders said Comey publicly conceded to Congress going "around the chain of command in the Department of Justice" a year ago to bypass former Attorney General Loretta Lynch during the FBI's investigation into Clinton's use of a private email server and transmission of classified materials while she served as secretary of state.

Comey has publicly confirmed the FBI is investigating possible contacts between the Trump presidential campaign and Russian Federation. In public hearings, Comey has declined to answer when asked if Trump is under investigation, urging lawmakers not to read anything into that statement.

Stump, 70, who works at a vehicle dealership in Hamburg, Pennsylvania, said he's not yet formed an opinion about Trump's firing of Comey, preferring to let the story develop. "We probably get 1,000 calls a week", he said.

"They were fought in the shadows. It was spy versus spy", Montoya said.

"Today we will no doubt hear calls for a new investigation which could only serve to impede the current work being done", McConnell said. Russians have been mentioned, in the liberal press, more often than the existing evidence justifies, but a connection may exist between Trump's American oligarchs and the Russian oligarchs, a connection either partly known or guessed at by Trump himself. Already, Trump's attorney general, Jeff Sessions, who was active in the Trump campaign, has recused himself.

The White House does not seem to like any questions about this. Schiff is the top Democrat on the House intelligence committee, which is also investigating.

Following the sacking, Democrats have amplified calls for a special prosecutor to be appointed to investigate the Trump campaign's potential connections to Russian Federation.

"This is a deeply troubling development for our system of checks and balances and the rule of law", Brian said in a statement.

The four candidates include acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe, assistant FBI director in charge Paul Abbate, Chicago special agent in charge Michael J. Anderson and Richmond, Va., special agent in charge Adam Lee, the official said. The Times and the Post say Trump's frustration bubbled over during his weekend stay at his golf course in Bedminster, NJ. Comey, who is six foot eight, stood between the White House flunkies and the sick man's bed, and they retreated.

While unlikely, Comey's ouster also could lead to the appointment of a special prosecutor, a recommendation Democrats have been pushing for months.
