Monaco have won their first Ligue 1 title in 17 years after beating Saint Etienne Wednesday night.

No story this season has captured the imagination more than the rise of Monaco, who have broken Paris Saint-Germain's Ligue 1 monopoly and can look back on a remarkable Champions League campaign that saw them stun Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund to reach the semi-finals.

Monaco have made it after a long season and furious rivalry with PSG, who clearly missed their attacking firepower after Zlatan Ibrahimovic's transfer to Manchester United.

For the first time in five seasons, someone besides Paris Saint-Germain has lifted the Ligue 1 trophy; Monaco have set a new precedent in France and have proven that the right style of play, combined with the right balance of youth and experienced players, can achieve greatness.

Still, with comparisons flying around likening Mbappe to Thierry Henry and now Neymar, it's tough to keep the hype train from running off the rails.

In the words of Bob Dylan, the times they are a changin.

Mbappe has caught the eye of suitors from the top teams in Europe in his breakthrough season.

Stephane Ruffier palmed away a Mbappe snapshot with the first real chance, but there was little he could do moments later when the striker latched onto Radamel Falcao's threaded pass and calmly rounded the Saint-Etienne goalkeeper before slotting home.

Falcao then went close with a fine header seven minutes into the second half.

Kylian Mbappe and Valere Germain scored the goals that dethroned the Parisian side as title holders, ending the club's four-year stay at the top of the table.

Jordan Veretout then skipped beyond Subasic following Henri Saivet's through ball, but Poland global Kamil Glik recovered in time to deny the on-loan Aston Villa midfielder.

"We've had a superb season both individually and collectively".

"This year we've been uncompromising". I did not imagine that we could get there in such a short time.
