The policeman received moderate injuries, said the police.

"The terrorist rushed toward him, whipped out a knife that he had in his possession, stormed him and began stabbing him". Closed circuit footage released by police shows a bald man in a jacket lunging at the uniformed officer and swiping a knife at him before pinning him to the ground.

The Jordanian government denounced the "crime" of the death of its citizen, giving his full name as Mohammed Abdullah Salim Al-Kassaji.

"Relocating the American embassy would not harm the peace process, on the contrary", a statement by the Prime Minister's Bureau said. Israel's ambulance service Magen David Adom said the police officer was not severely wounded.

He said that the Jordanian citizen was killed in occupied East Jerusalem, therefore, Israel, as the country that illegally occupies the city, is responsible for any escalation.

The incident comes against the background of increasing stabbing attacks in Israel committed by Palestinians.

Jordan and Israel signed a peace accord in 1994.

President Donald Trump will express support for Palestinian "self-determination" during a Middle East trip this month, a senior aide said on Friday, suggesting Trump is open to a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict despite not having publicly embraced the idea so far.

A lack of a solution to the decade-long issue will lead to more tension in the region, they added. Others died during clashes and protests.

Israel has blamed the violence on incitement by Palestinian political and religious leaders compounded on social media sites.

Trump's meetings with Israeli and Palestinian leaders, now due to be held separately, will be closely watched for whether he begins to articulate a cohesive strategy to revive long-stalled negotiations. "It will advance it by correcting a historic injustice and by smashing the Palestinian fantasy that Jerusalem is not the capital of Israel". Peace talks between the sides broke down in 2014.

Moving the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem would not harm the peace process with the Palestinians but would help peace efforts, the Prime Minister's Bureau said on Sunday.
