Kuyt calls time after hat-trick heroics

Today's news comes after Kuyt led his beloved Feyenoord to their first Eredivisie title in 18 years over the weekend.

Not a bad way to bow out, becoming an immortal club legend and all.

"To me this feels like the right time to retire".

"Since returning to Feyenoord I've had two fantastic seasons, with the title this season an absolute highlight".

Kuyt said on the official Feyenoord website, "All my dreams have come true". All my dreams are realized. He also lined out for Liverpool in the 2007 Champions League final.

I knew when I came back two years ago that we could win the championship and everyone laughed at me when I said so. Personally, I have always felt that this season I could still important, even though I did not play any more games from start to finish after the winter.

But the former Liverpool man has since made a decision to hang up his boots off the back of his heroics, with Feyenoord also confirming the striker will now take up a new role with the club off the pitch. That the club wants to keep me, is a wonderful token of appreciation.

The club confirmed on Wednesday that Kuyt will now focus on studying to take up a non-playing role in Rotterdam, under the guidance of technical director Martin van Geel. As such, he will prepare himself for the coming period by undergoing [sports] management courses.

Kuyt began his senior career with Utrecht in 1998 before spending three years with Feyenoord from 2003 to 2006.

Kuyt, who can play at multiple positions like forward, winger and attacking midfielder, also made 104 global appearances, including the 2010 FIFA World Cup final and the third place at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. He returned to Feyenoord in 2015, and his experience and eye for goal have proved invaluable for manager and ex-Arsenal man Giovanni van Bronckhorst.
