Free airline miles are a precious resource, something people go to great lengths to accumulate.

Lyft announced the new initiative today, saying the partnership will "make your travel more rewarding".

Ride-hailing company Lyft has launched a partnership to reward customers with Delta SkyMiles.

To get started, sign up for Delta's SkyMiles program - if you don't already have a membership - and then link your Lyft account. There are certain restrictions on the mile reward, namely that you can't earn them for things like taxes on the ride or tolls fees, but otherwise the benefit is open to anyone with a Lyft account to catches a ride with the company.

Heading to the airport for that Delta flight will be even more productive, with riders earning three miles for every $1 spent on rides to or from qualifying airports until August 31, 2017.

Of course, this isn't the first time ride share companies have dabbled in rewards program partnerships.

Meanwhile rival Uber has partnered with companies such as American Airlines, PayPal, American Express and Starwood Hotels. In November of 2016, the airline teamed with Airbnb to offer SkyMiles members the ability to earn free miles as either a host or as a guest with the hospitality platform.

Last month, Lyft announced a fresh $600 million from investors. And on Sunday, Lyft and Waymo (a subsidiary of Google parent company Alphabet) said they're working together to launch self-driving vehicle pilots.
