Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola stresses importance of Vincent Kompany

"There's no greater pleasure than to have possession of the ball and to be able to control a game which we do really well, so I have seen progress".

However, it was only City's third win in nine league matches, and their inconsistency this season has left them 12 points adrift of leaders Chelsea with three games to play.

Now with the Eagles very much in contention for relegation from the Premier League, the 62-year-old has now told his players to show fight and passion against Hull City, in a bid to avoid the drop.

"It's just that somewhere it's in there for us to create more chances, it's in there for us to concede less goals".

Silva gleefully swept home his opening goal after Martin Kelly, a right back playing at center back, failed to adequately head clear a short cross from Sterling. In the statistics, we are the team in the Premier League with the most clear-cut chances, but are seventh in the teams scoring the most goals.

Asked whether City could count on a fully fit Kompany next season, Guardiola was realistic in his assessment but acknowledged his backline operates with far more confidence if the Belgium global is around. The Belgian and Otamendi, plus Yaya Toure, anchored City in the centre, allowing de Bruyne and Silva to roam and a lighting-quick front line to attack the spaces between and behind Palace's defenders. Asked what he can do ensure players heed his warning they are not safe, the manager said: "They do most of the time".

Nevertheless, Guardiola does not want his fourth-placed side to think the job is done as they approach a final stretch of games against Leicester City, West Brom and Watford.

"In the game against Everton, they arrive four times and we lose 4-0".

Everything City did went through Silva, who passed a late fitness test to return after missing the recent draws against Man United and Middlesbrough.

It was remarkable that Leroy Sane did not score, given his number of penetrating runs.

However, Jose Mourinho's side still hold a game in hand and have the opportunity of qualifying for the Champions League by winning the Europa League, which Guardiola eluded to - ahead of their rivals clash with Arsenal on Sunday.

Kompany has only played eight times in the Premier League this season but City have taken 13 points from those matches, averaging out as 1.63 points won per match the defender has played in. "It will be wonderful", Guardiola added. (Against Palace), we discovered that maybe he can play as a striker! It makes a difference to have the next two games here. "We need to have back-up though in case this (his injury) happens again".
