Environment Minister Anil Dave, a long-time Sangh member best known for crafting the Bharatiya Janata Party's strategy to unseat Congress stalwart Digvijay Singh as Madhya Pradesh chief minister in 2003, died here today.

How effective was Dave as minister for environment and forests?

Dave became the environment minister previous year on the eve of his birthday on 6 July, when the PM reshuffled his cabinet.

Environment Minister Anil Madhav Dave passed away on Thursday. Dave was a "university" himself in environment conservation, election management and developing a dedicated work force for the party, he said. But a look at minister of state (independent charge) for environment and forests, Anil Madhav Dave's career progression makes it look possible. "This demise is a personal loss", Modi said.

Dave had not been keeping well for the last few months. Expressing shock, he tweeted deepest condolences to his family and well wishers. The Finance Minister Arun Jaitley also expressed his shock over his demise.

He was very passionate on projects including conservation of the Narmada river through an organisation "Narmada Samagra" he founded.

As the Environment Minister, Mr Dave felt that green concerns and development can go together, a line also followed by his predecessor in keeping with the National Democratic Alliance government's thrust on ease of doing business.

State BJP president Nandkumar Singh Chauhan described Dave as a nationalist thinker, an able organiser and an environmentalist. His contribution was understood to be the key for the India's attempt to contribute to the Climate Change and Global Warming.

Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Ghulam Nabi Azad recalled Dave as "a very soft spoken and honest person".

Dave has also written several books in Hindi and English on the subject of politics, administration, art and culture. He has left his Union Minister's position vacant. He was brought in a state of cardiac arrest.
