There's no driver more determined in the field than Will Power, though, and Power has been fast when he's not running into Charlie Kimball or getting flat tires.

In less than 48 hours, speedway workers must convert the track from the 2.439-mile, 14-turn road course into the traditional 2.5-mile oval. The victory margin of 5.2830 seconds didn't even seem that close, and Ryan Hunter-Reay was a distant third. "I didn't mind it", Power said. "The Indy 500 previous year sold out because of the community, not really because of what we did, but because of the way the community was and we feel that again".

Oh, and you have to overtake Team Penske. He coasted down the front straightaway and onto the escape road - Turn 4 of the oval - soon after he'd passed Alexander Rossi, last year's Indianapolis 500 victor, for sixth place.

Dixon has qualified in the top six in all four of the road course races this season. "I missed it by a tenth and a-half, and I made a hundred mistakes in the lap". "For me, it's just a dream come true". We came from the back at St. Pete. "Our initial acceleration is similar, but as you go through the gears, they pull away". Good [championship] points there for everybody on the NTT DATA vehicle. He paced first and second practice, qualifying where he took his 47th career pole position, and this morning warmup, before leading 61 of 85 laps.

INDYCARINDYCAR GRAND PRIXSite: Indianapolis Schedule: Saturday, race, 3:50 p.m., ABC. Last year: Simon Pagenaud won both the pole and the race in Indy. Brazils Helio Castroneves will join Power on the front row in Saturdays race after finishing in 1:08.1169. "Excited for tomorrow. Hopefully we have a good, clean start and see what happens in the race".

Power's Chevrolet-powered auto was followed to the checkers by the Honda-powered cars of Dixon and Hunter-Reay and then his Team Penske teammates Pagenaud and Castroneves.

On top of bouncing back from a rough start, Rahal now is in good form with the 500 coming in two weeks, and it can't hurt to have a strong day at IMS in preparation. I could brake pretty deep into 1.

"It was nice to pick up some points", Dixon said, "and to finish ahead of some of the Penske drivers". "You know, we really struggled with pace and couldn't quite get things where we wanted to be".

The only real surprise was Penske didnt have five cars in the top six.

Graham Hill is the only driver to have earned the "Triple Crown of Motorsports", that same crown Fernando Alonso is hunting by racing in the Indy 500. "Scott and I were kind of in the minority (of the final group)".

"The first time back every year, it's the same feeling over and over", racing fan David Osborn said.

Three laps and one corner.

"It was definitely - you know, you're on the toes all day because you had the autograph session in between and then some appearances. It's a big testament to that small organization that's really got inspiration to grow and develop, and it's just a cool feeling". Pagenaud is the defending IndyCar champ and the defending IndyCar Grand Prix champ.

Practice begins Thursday. Qualifying is set for Friday. Power won previously in 2015.

The first of two consecutive IndyCar races from Speedway, Indiana, will run on Saturday, as drivers take part in the IndyCar Grand Prix. (12) Will Power, Chevrolet, 01:07.7044-seconds (129.687 mph) 2.
