Asked if the pick would be announced before his trip overseas, Mr. Trump said, "Even that is possible".

The absence of anyone from Trump's administration on the shows' planned lineups was reportedly in spite of producers desperately trying to find someone to feature-with one show reporting White House spokespeople had simply been unreachable in the lead up to Sunday. That could be a way for Comey to protect himself and make sure what he says is accurately reflected considering it seems pretty obvious any testimony from a closed hearing would be quickly leaked to the press.

It's unlikely that Mr Comey will not eventually respond to Mr Trump's assertions, and the stage is set for further dramatic confrontation as the president has suggested he might have recorded their conversations. "The Russians did interfere in our election".

The former director of the agency, James Comey, was sacked by Trump earlier this week in a stunning move that has raised questions about the underlying motivation. Schiller was among those Trump consulted about Comey and was tapped by the president to deliver a letter informing the director of his firing.

The South Carolina Republican called Mr. Trump's tweet alluding to "tapes" of conversations with former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey "inappropriate".

"They've been vetted over their lifetime, essentially, but very well-known, high-respected, really talented people", Trump said. "He's a little bit like a quarterback that gets ahead of his offensive line".

Mr Trump denied that account in a Fox News interview on Friday.

But the blowback from Comey's firing left the White House reeling once again. They called the president's tweet a clear attempt at intimidation.

"That's, frankly, offensive", Spicer said.
