Sanchez defends Wenger but unsure over future

The Tigers had drawn with Manchester United and defeated Liverpool so there was every chance they could have got a point at the very least. "After that you deal with what happens", Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger said, referring to the fact that his side have more points than they managed as runners-up in 2015-16. The Frenchman has faced repeated calls to quit in a tough season which may well result in Arsenal missing out on a top-four place.

Wenger had suggested earlier in the week that some teams are already "on holiday" as the season draws to a close.

He said: "I answered for 20 years the question, "the top four is nothing special". I am quite surprised.

Arsenal's 2-0 win meant that Manchester City, 3-1 winners at home against West Bromwich Albion, will still need a point to be absolutely certain of finishing in the top four.

"We won more games than previous year and we have one point more already".

Arsenal have a chance to add pressure to those above them in the table as they welcome already relegated Sunderland to the Emirates on Tuesday evening.

"I know people get the hump with Ozil and he is not a runner-arounder, but the lad can play and he is a lot better than what they have got". That was not likely to happen three or four weeks ago but we need to patient a bit because we played Sunday, Wednesday, Saturday, Tuesday, with two hard away games.

The brace took Sanchez's Premier League tally for the season to 22.

"At Man City as well we were really unlucky with some decisions".

It remains to be seen whether Arsenal will make a move for Pickford when the transfer window re-opens this summer, but Wenger was left impressed with the shot-stopper's performance against his side - labelling him as "exceptional".

The former Chelsea player said the off-the-pitch speculation over Arsene Wenger's own future had not affected the team on it and could not be considered an explanation for the squad's mixed campaign.
