When Kim Si-woo tapped in for par on the 18th green at Sawgrass to clinch victory in the Players Championship on Sunday, it represented only the fourth time in 19 PGA Tour starts this season that the 21-year old South Korean had managed to complete 72 holes at an event with a halfway cut.

England's Ian Poulter returns to the top 100 of the World Golf Rankings after earning a share of second at the Players Championship.

Kim claimed his second win on the PGA Tour in just his second appearance in the tournament after finishing tied for 23rd past year in his debut at The Players. Kim's 3-under 69 wasn't the best score of the day, but his composure at such a young age garnered praise from his peers.

Holmes wasn't alone. Defending champion Jason Day closed with an 80, keeping very much in tact the streak of no victor ever repeating in the Players.

Kim's second PGA Tour victory earned him US$1.89 million (US$1=W1,123).

Oosthuizen, who fell out of the lead for good with a fairway bunker shot into the water for double bogey on No. 4, watched it all day playing alongside Kim.

Hideki Matsuyama, Justin Thomas, Jon Rahm and Pat Perez round out the top five in the FedExCup standings.

In doing so, the 21-year-old became the youngest victor of event, breaking the mark previously held by Adam Scott, who won the championship as a 23-year-old in 2004. In only six starts on the season, McIlroy is now No. 48 in the FedExCup standings.

Kim has played in 19 events this year.

"It just shows you how good a player he is and how cool and calm he is", Oosthuizen said.

Kim became just the second Asian victor of the Players after his idol South Korean K.J. Choi triumphed in 2011.

He finished at 10-under 278 for his second PGA Tour win, three shots better than Ian Poulter (71) and Louis Oosthuizen (73). "They say you need experience to do well at the majors, but if I can study the course beforehand and prepare accordingly, I think it's possible (to capture a major)". "And never once did he look flustered at all".

US golf commentator Brandel Chamblee likened the 21-year-old's surprise victory to Donald Trump's shock USA election victory and the outcome of the Brexit referendum.

Kim said the win a year ago allowed him to remain calm on the golf course.

After holing from 50 feet for an eagle on the par-five second, Johnson dropped shots at the fourth and seventh before a birdie on the ninth took him to the turn in 35.

Rafa Cabrera Bello of Spain was never going to win, but it will be hard to forget how he finished. He only got into the tournament a few weeks ago when the PGA Tour realized a clerical oversight regarding his return from a foot injury previous year.
