Five Guys is America's favorite and most well-known burger brand - at least according to The Harris Poll's annual EquiTrend Study, released Tuesday.

Five Guys, which first opened its doors in 1986, in Arlington, best known for its straightforward burger offerings with limitless toppings and fresh-cut fries cooked in peanut oil. The designation comes from Harris Poll surveying more than 100,000 Americans about 4,000 companies, including 90 restaurants. This is the first time Five Guys has been crowned the burger champion in the study, which asks respondents to rate brands based on familiarity, quality, and how likely they are to consider purchasing its items. McDonald's did score highest in familiarity, but its other two scores were on the low end, resulting in its poor standing in the rankings.

As the chain grows, Americans' appreciation for Five Guys has increased. East Coast burger chain Five Guys has officially edged out L.A. favorite In-N-Out in the running for America's favorite burger, KTLA reports. Burger King, Jack in The Box and Carl's Jr. didn't crack the top 10 list. Today, there are about 1,500 locations worldwide.

In-N-Out opened its first drive-thru in 1948, and has more than 300 locations in California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Texas and OR - but not Colorado. The chain only serves burgers, fries, shakes and drinks. That figure is now 68 percent, with Five Guys reaching 81 percent familiarity among Generation Z and millennials.
