Trump assails 'witch hunt' after naming of special counsel

During a joint appearance with Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, Trump called the federal investigation into his campaign's possible ties to Russian officials who interfered in the US election "ridiculous" and made a point of noting he got a "very very strong recommendation" from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein regarding Comey's termination.

"It was a counterintelligence investigation, but now they've appointed a special counsel who's apparently looking at crimes, so what you told Comey is potentially an obstruction of justice charge", Graham said.

"I determined that it is in the public interest for me to exercise my authority and appoint a Special Counsel to assume responsibility for this matter", Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said in a statement on Wednesday.

Watch above, via Twitter and CNN. "Even my enemies say there was no collusion", he said. But GOP lawmakers have grown increasingly anxious since Trump fired Comey, who had been leading the bureau's probe - and after Comey associates said he had notes from a meeting in which Trump asked him to shut down the investigation into Flynn's Russian Federation ties.

But Attorney General Jeff Sessions had been charged with coming up with reasons to fire Comey, according to the New York Times, which reported that officials in the White House and DOJ began building a case against the former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief the week prior to his ouster.

The latest political storm, coupled with the still-potent fallout from Trump's recent disclosure of classified information to Russian diplomats at the White House, has overshadowed all else in the capital and beyond.

Several sources close to Flynn and to the administration tell The Daily Beast that Trump has expressed his hopes that a resolution of the FBI's investigation in Flynn's favor might allow Flynn to rejoin the White House in some capacity-a scenario some of Trump's closest advisers in and outside the West Wing have assured him absolutely should not happen...

The White House has called the report an inaccurate portrayal of the conversation between Comey and Trump, but at least three congressional committees have demanded acccess to the memos and related documents.

His appointment was met with approval from Democrats and Republicans on Capitol Hill, including Sen. "Impeccable credentials. Should be widely accepted".

In a written statement, Mr Trump insisted again that there were no nefarious ties between his presidential election campaign and Russian Federation.

Flynn, in particular, worked with the Russian ambassador to establish "a back channel for communication between Trump and [Russian President Vladimir Putin] that could bypass the US national security bureaucracy, which both sides considered hostile to improved relations", according to Reuters.

The news website Politico quoted a White House adviser as saying there was a struggle to get any surrogates on TV because no one knew what to say or how to defend the story. The probe included a look into possible Flynn ties to the Kremlin.
