US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson heading to New Zealand

Tillerson, one of the most senior appointments in US President Donald Trump's administration, will meet with Prime Minister Bill English and Foreign Affairs Minister Gerry Brownlee in Wellington on Tuesday.

US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert told NZME Mr Tillerson's visit to New Zealand will "reaffirm our strong ties and discuss coordination on shared strategic interests".

"We have worked closely together to counter terrorism in Iraq and Afghanistan".

Mr Tillerson is travelling first to Sydney, along with US Defense Secretary James Mattis, to attend the 2017 Australia-U.S. The US is our third-largest individual trading partner. The Secretaries will coordinate our policies and identify ways to further strengthen the alliance and deepen cooperation between our two governments.

In the first Australia-United States Ministerial Consultations to be held with the new US administration, the two sides are expected to discuss mutual strategic priorities such as North Korea and the Islamic State militant group, Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop and Defense Minister Marise Payne said in a press release.
