The Wolves won the game, 4-3.

"American Hockey League affiliates play a significant role in the success of all NHL clubs and are we are proud to have the Chicago Wolves as our first in team history", Golden Knights general manager George McPhee said.

The five-year deal will see the Golden Knights replace the St. Louis Blues as the primary National Hockey League team affiliated with the Wolves.

The Vegas Golden Knights have taken yet another step towards hockey relevance with Tuesday's announcement of a minor league affiliate.

Chicago Wolves Chairman Don Levin spoke with Crain's Chicago Business earlier on Tuesday, expressing frustration with the team's relationship with the Blues. "It's a situation like I had with Washington and Hershey".

They had been the top affiliate of the St. Louis Blues, who will still supply the Wolves with some players for next season but set up their own primary affiliate for the following season.

Only time will tell how many players the Golden Knights will send to the AHL this season. With quite a few premium prospects coming up the pipeline-Tage Thompson, Vince Dunn, Samuel Blais, Ville Husso, Jake Walman, and Jordan Kyrou, to name a few-the Blues are going to need quite a few AHL spots so that their young players can develop.

According to a Wolves news release, McPhee and Wolves owner Don Levin have it written in the agreement that the goal is to win a championship at the AHL level. The Blues had a major shakeup on coach Mike Yeo's staff Tuesday and Berube and some of his assistants with the Wolves could find themselves in the National Hockey League with St. Louis.

"When we hired Craig to work with our organization, he had assistant coach options [in the NHL]", said Armstrong. "He is a very good coach and had a very good season".

The major change will be that St. Louis will have no control over ice time.

Throughout the season, AHL players will be promoted ("recalled") to the partner National Hockey League club for a number of reasons. McPhee would not divulge the amount of money involved or the length of the deal.

The Wolves have been one of the more successful AHL franchises in recent history winning five division championships, three conference championships, and a pair of Calder Cups since joining the AHL in 2001. "Professional playoffs are different than the regular season and he understands that and he wants his players to be ready to win". He signed a professional tryout April 7 but didn't get into a game.

One of the Blues' options for an AHL team appeared to be Kansas City, but those efforts lost support and seem to be dead now.

By late March, the two sides had ironed out all the details.
