Without the familiar uniforms (our heroes instead sporting desert gear that nearly looks like Star Wars cosplay) and set on a unusual alien world instead of the USS Discovery's bridge, the image is quite unlike what we would have expected from our first look at Discovery.

The trailer features Sonequa Martin-Green, fresh from The Walking Dead, as Michael Burnham, a first officer promoted unexpectedly to the position of captain by her mentor, Captain Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh). The first episode of the series will premiere on CBS later this fall, but all the subsequent episodes will stream exclusively on CBS All Access.

The trailer does a pretty good job of introducing the newest crew members viewers will be exploring the vast universe with.

Star Trek: Discovery looks to have a promising cast with Jason Isaacs, Anthony Rapp, and Doug Jones.

All of that said, it's still very early, and I'm doing my best to reserve final judgment until we actually have a show to watch.

Remember, Star Trek: Discovery is set before the original Star Trek, so we likely will see some toys that we're familiar with, perhaps with a little variation here or there. "We're endeavoring to bring that level of scope, scale, and emotional experience to the new Trek". Before Kirk, Spock and the Enterprise there was Discovery. Star Trek: Discovery will also have an aftershow, Talking Trek, which will air on CBS All Access. His involvement went a long way towards reassuring skeptical fans that the wayward Star Trek franchise might finally be returning to his roots.
