White House: Trump's morning tweets about Comey 'not a threat'

Mr Trump fired Mr Comey on Tuesday, later saying that "he wasn't doing a good job".

It's the latest attempt by the president to tamp down concerns about any Russian ties amid an ongoing investigation of his campaign's associates.

Spicer added he was "not aware" of whether audio surveillance was conducted when Comey and Trump met for dinner at the White House on January 27. Trump said, in a morning Twitter tirade that painted a picture of a president under siege and lashing out. A former senior FBI official said Comey also would never have told the president he was not under investigation, The Hill reported.

Rogers, an ex-FBI agent and former chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, has drawn the backing of the FBI Agents Association.

Calling Trump's remarks about possible taped conversations "outrageous", Sen. I said, If it s possible would you let me know, am I under investigation? "But I do know he was uneasy with it".

Comey's replacement requires Senate confirmation.

Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a campaign of interference in the election, US intelligence agencies concluded in January, aimed at tilting the vote in Trump's favor. "I think as well our institutions are under assault internally". "It is done, and I will be fine". Comey declined, instead offering "honest". On Thursday Trump said he would have fired Comey regardless of any such recommendations.

Clapper said America's founding fathers had created three co-equal branches of government with checks and balances, but with Trump as president, that was now under assault and "eroding".

The president tweeted, "As a very active President with lots of things happening, it is not possible for my surrogates to stand at podium with flawless accuracy!"

-.Maybe the best thing to do would be to cancel all future "press briefings" and hand out written responses for the sake of accuracy??? "The Fake Media is working overtime today!" he added.

The attorneys did not release copies of Trump's tax returns, so The Associated Press can not independently verify their conclusions.

U.S. presidents are normally at pains to avoid any suggestion of interference or even commenting on ongoing investigations.

Mr Trump has refused to release his income tax records, despite pressure from Democrats, breaking with a practice set by his predecessors.

Less than a week after U.S. President Donald Trump fired James Comey, the administration has interviewed at least eight candidates to be Federal Bureau of Investigation director and Trump has said a decision could come within days.

The swirling controversy has obliterated any momentum from the House passage of the Republican health care bill last week and threatens to overshadow Trump's first worldwide trip, beginning next week, in which the president will meet with leaders in both the Middle East and Europe.

The White House initially said Comey was sacked on the recommendation of the two top officials at the Justice Department. The firing drew a wave of criticism in large part because the FBI has been investigating whether election meddling by Russian Federation involved people in Trump's presidential campaign, and Trump said in an interview with NBC that the investigation factored into his decision to fire Comey. "I don't have property in Russian Federation".

The unnamed Russian billionaire cited by the Trump company's lawyers is Dmitry Rybolovlev, whose financial empire springs from his companies' production of potash, often used for fertilizer.
