An 11-year-old boy was struck and killed by an MBTA commuter rail train near the Salem Station Friday night, police sources confirmed.

Transit police, along with Salem agencies, responded around 8 p.m. amid reports that a male trespassing onto the inbound tracks had been struck.

Neighbors said the boy was playing with other children when he got hit.

"The kids were really traumatized that were hanging with him", a witness said.

"There are no adequate words to aptly convey the utter tragic event this is", police said in their statement.

The Essex County District Attorney's office told Boston 25 News that a representative was heading to the scene and an update would be provided.
