He said that five of the dead had been formally identified and it would be a slow and painstaking task to identify the others.

Earlier, Londoners confronted and shouted at a Tory cabinet minister at the scene of the fire, while Ms May's chief of staff fled reporters asking why he had failed to undertake a called-for safety review.

"Our focus has been on those that we know were in Grenfell Tower". They say they will also use visual elements like tattoos, scars and medical implants in the painstaking process.

Police have said criminal prosecutors will be pursued if there is evidence of wrongdoing.

Help will be given to residents who do not have bank accounts. He asked anyone who was in the tower and survived to contact police immediately.

Trade Minister Greg Hands said Sunday the government is carrying out an "urgent inspection" of the roughly 2,500 similar tower blocks across Britain to assess their safety, while an opposition lawmaker urged the government to quickly secure documents in the Grenfell renovation for the criminal investigation. The search and recovery operation in the 24-story Grenfell Tower continues, he said, adding that it has been incredibly distressing for families.

Prime Minister Theresa May has said the support given to survivors and the families of those who died was "not good enough" and there were "huge frustrations" on the ground as people struggled to find information.

More than 3 million pounds ($3.8 million) have been raised for the victims.

Two nearby Underground subway lines were partially shut down Saturday in the fire area to make sure that debris from the tower did not land on the tracks.
