Arab nations sever diplomatic ties with Qatar

The national airline, Qatar Airways, meanwhile has suspended its flights to Saudi Arabia.

Sudan has expressed its concern over several Arab powers breaking off diplomatic ties with Qatar and offered to mediate between all sides, the foreign ministry said on Monday.

Kristian Ulrichsen, a Gulf expert at the U.S-based Baker Institute, said if Qatar's land borders and air space were closed for any length of time "it would wreak havoc on the timeline and delivery" of the World Cup.

Federation Internationale de Football Association have claimed they are "in regular contact" with the Organising Committee of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after a number of countries severed diplomatic ties with the country today.

Bahrain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates cut ties with Qatar after accusing the nation of supporting terrorism, a claim they have denied.

The cutoff in relations was sparked by a purported hack into Qatar's state news agency and leaks of alleged comments by the Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani in support of the Muslim Brotherhood and Saudi Arabia's arch-rival, Iran.

"We believe that U.S. inventories will continue falling this summer, allowing Opec to point to lower stocks as a positive measure of success", Sandy Fielden, director of oil and products research at Morningstar said in a note.

Still, the Qatari foreign minister struck a defiant tone, saying his nation rejected those trying to impose their will or intervene in its internal affairs.

Saudi Arabia's excommunication of Qatar has been brewing since 1995, and the dispute's long past and likely lingering future are best explained by natural gas.

Associated Press reported that diplomatic relations between Maldives and Qatar was established in 1984, and the nation is struggling with the country's youth involvement in extremism.

Bahrain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates announced Monday they would cut diplomatic ties.

Closing all transport ties with Qatar, the three Gulf states gave Qatari visitors and residents two weeks to leave.

"I think what we're witnessing", Tillerson said, "is a growing list of some irritants in the region that have been there for some time, and obviously they have now bubbled up to a level that countries decided they needed to take action in an effort to have those differences addressed". It did not elaborate.

Egypt accused Qatar of taking an "anti-Egyptian course" and said Cairo had been unable to dissuade it from supporting terrorism.

Qataris living in the four countries have been given 14 days to return home, with Qatar's diplomats also set to be ejected.

Turkey also called for dialogue to settle the dispute and a government spokesman said President Tayyip Erdogan was working for a diplomatic solution to the rift.

All the nations also said they planned to cut air and sea traffic.

Qatar is also a major exporter of condensate, an ultra-light form of crude oil, as well as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), with most supplies of the two fuels going to Japan and South Korea under long-term supply contracts.

Doha subsequently cultivated not only Islamists like America's foes Iran, Hamas and the Taliban in pursuit of leverage, but also Washington itself, hosting the largest U.S. air base in the Middle East. On its website, the carrier said the suspension of its flights will take effect Tuesday.

The route between Doha, Qatar and Dubai is popular among business travelers and both are major transit hubs for travelers between Asia and Europe.
