Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla, who is now out with an ankle injury and expected to miss the start of next season, said Wenger had worked "miracles" at the club.

However, Kroenke said: "Our ambition is to win the Premier League and other major trophies in Europe".

"He is driven to move forward, he is driven to evolve and he is driven to achieve those objectives of winning for this club and making those fans proud", Gazidis said. Let's be together to support our players, to support the club and all give our absolute best to be at the level that we want to be. "He has a fantastic track record and has our full backing".

Arsenal qualified for the Champions League in every full season under Wenger until this year, when the team missed out after finishing fifth in the Premier League.

With his future finally resolved, Arsene Wenger has one last chance to restore his battered reputation and end the civil war that threatened to tear Arsenal apart.Arsenal's French manager Arsene Wenger holds the FA Cup trophy on the pitch after their win over Chelsea in the English FA Cup final football match between Arsenal and Chelsea at Wembley stadium in London on May 27, 2017.

The new terms do not, according to media reports, include a break clause and, should the contract be completed, Wenger will extend his reign to 23 years. Some fans staged protest marches before home games in recent months calling for the manager to step down, and planes carrying "Wenger out" banners flew over the stadium during two away games.

But the Frenchman called on Arsenal supporters to remain united, having admitted ahead of the FA Cup final that the uncertainty over his future had created an "absolutely horrendous" atmosphere.

Wenger added: "Once the game starts and you are a fan, you stand behind the team, that is what I have not accepted this season and I will never accept it".

"You don't fire good people, you don't fire people who are world-class, you don't fire people who are driven to improve".

His key objectives for the close season will be to tie star duo Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil to new contracts and strengthen his squad for the rigours of a Europa League campaign.

"We have a very heavy squad at the moment so maybe we might lose some players".

"We're committed to mounting a sustained league challenge and that will be our focus this summer and next season".

Kroenke, who rebuffed a takeover bid from Russian billionaire and minority shareholder Alisher Usmanov last week, hailed Wenger as the best man for the job as he too targeted more silverware. He has a great opportunity to deliver the success that the fans deserve and the legacy that his long contribution merits.
