Six correctional officers have been rescued after an attempted confiscation of an inmate's cellphone prompted a fight at a SC prison.

S.C. Department of Corrections spokeswoman Sommer Sharpe said an inmate at Trenton Correctional Insititution had a contraband cellphone in the prison and when officers attempted to take it from him around midnight, they were assaulted by several prisoners.

The Aiken County Sheriff's Office received a notification for assistance by Edgefield County Sheriff's Office, said Capt. Eric Abdullah with the Aiken County Sheriff's Office.

Two of the officers are being treated for non-life threatening injuries. The prison has been secured, and Sharpe says no inmates were injured. Sharpe says there was no public safety threat.

For years, the state has asked the Federal Communications Commission for permission to jam cell signals at its prisons, rendering useless any cellphones possessed by inmates. Trenton is about 20 miles (32 kilometers) northeast of Augusta, Georgia.
