All votes in the House of Representatives were cancelled for Wednesday. More than a dozen GOP lawmakers were there with staff.

- Who was the shooter? Violence for the sake of politics is an attack on democracy. But officials at the scene said that piece of the investigation remains unclear.

A Facebook spokesperson told Fox News the pages were taken down after the shooting for violating that company's community standards.

Hodgkinson was killed by U.S. Capitol Police during a morning shootout at a Virginia baseball field.

Five people were taken to Washington DC-area hospitals and President Donald Trump himself revealed in a national address that Hodgkinson had died. The nature of their injuries was not immediately clear. He is expected to survive.

Tim Slater, the Federal Bureau of Investigation special agent in charge of the Washington Field Office, said he would not comment on what types of weapons Hodgkinson had or which one he was using as he shot House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, (R-Louisiana), and four others. Scalise, 51, was injured in the hip. "The whip was in good spirits and spoke to his wife by phone", the statement read.

"I think it would have been a really gruesome day, so having the Capitol Police there really saved lives today; I think there's no question about that".

The shooter - identified as 66-year-old James Hodgkinson, an apparent supporter of former presidential candidate Bernie Sanders - later died of his injuries, President Donald Trump announced.

"My thoughts and prayers are with Rep. Scalise, capitol police and all those affected by this tragedy", Inhofe said in a tweet. Brown declined to give conditions or identify the victims.

He was in a critical condition Wednesday night and doctors said he would need several more operations.

Law enforcement at the gunman's former home in Belleville, Illinois.

During a speech to Congress on Wednesday, House Speaker Paul Ryan said that "an attack on one of us is an attack on all of us". Hodgkinson was said to have been among 1,000 volunteers around Davenport, but Becker said, "Nobody has a recollection of this guy coming in".

Colleagues said Mr Scalise had been fielding at second base at a local park in Alexandria, just across the Potomac River from the nation's capital, as the Republicans practised for their annual game with Democrats. The popular and gregarious lawmaker is known for his love of baseball and handed out commemorative bats when he secured the job of House whip several years ago.

Texas Rep. Joe Barton, still in his baseball uniform, told reporters a shooter came out to the practice and opened fire, shooting at Rep. Trent Kelly, R-Miss., who plays third base. He was slightly injured as he attempted to flee the gunman. They were on protective duty.

According to Alexandria, VA police, a suspect is in custody.

Police were first called at 7:09 a.m. about gunfire at the Eugene Simpson Stadium Park.

The shooting occurred while the Republican baseball team was practicing in Alexandria, Va.

The practice was for a bipartisan game scheduled for Thursday. There's no word on his status.

"Everyone on that field is a public servant", the president said. Scalise has represented Louisiana's 1st District since 2008. And the police detail was only there due to Scalise's presence.
