Blast at Indian fireworks factory triggers deadly blaze

According to officials, five critically injured workers in the incident are undergoing treatment in a hospital.

Balaghat: Twenty-three workers were charred to death and seven others were injured in a fire at a cracker factory in Kheri village in Balaghat district on Wednesday afternoon, an official said. "As of now the death toll in the incident has gone up to 25". A couple of people are still feared to be trapped under the debris, he said.

"Exactly what triggered the fire is yet be known". Authorities are investigating the cause of the incident and have charged the factory owner with criminally negligent manslaughter, but have not yet been able to arrest him. "The post-mortem on the bodies have been conducted and then samples from the spot were also collected". "It is possible that someone might have thrown a burning beedi", he added.

"Till now 21 bodies have been extricated from the debris, while 14 injured have been rushed to hospitals in Balaghat and Nagpur".

Dozens of employees managed to escape unhurt but firefighters spent two hours bringing the major blaze under control in Balaghat district of Madhya Pradesh state.

Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Wednesday night announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the families of the victims, reported ANI.

Yadav said the factory was located away from the human settlement.

Chances of fire in Indian factories and buildings are often high as owners usually ignore safety standards vis-a-vis fire.
