Police confirmed 17 deaths among the 600 residents thought to have lived in the tower but expect that toll to rise significantly as the building is searched.

Twenty people are fighting for their lives in a critical condition with 78 people taken to six different hospitals across London. People are also more aware of the dangers around cooking, heating and smoking. Southwark alone has 317 tall towers, more than any other United Kingdom local authority area.

In a statement, the Forest Row company said its work "met all required building control, fire regulation, and health and safety standards".

According to reports the Senate committee is due to finalise a report by October regarding the use of non-conforming building material.

Meanwhile, a woman identified as Samira Lamrani said she saw a woman trying to save a baby by dropping it from a window 'on the ninth or 10th floor' to waiting members of the public below to rescue it.

Another local resident, Joanna O'Connor, said she awoke to screams and sirens.

Black smoke billowed high into the air for hours after the blaze broke out.

Hundreds of people have been left homeless by the fire, with many celebrities taking to their social media to urge people to help in any way they can.

Moving tributes to the Grenfell fire victims have been written on a wall of condolence close to the tower block. "They do their last prayer", she said.

"People were starting to appear at the windows from all sides, frantically banging and screaming for help." another eyewitness said.

Another person said that the people were reassuring those trapped and at the windows.

After visiting emergency teams at the scene of the blaze in west London, Mrs May said a proper public investigation was needed to establish what happened. Residents had also warned of the site's restricted access for emergency vehicles.

The action group had also stated in 2016 that it believed "only a catastrophic event would bring an end to the risky living conditions at the tower block".

Smoke was still wafting out of the shell of the Grenfell Tower on Thursday morning and a Reuters witness saw a big piece of cladding falling from the building, 32 hours after fire engulfed the building in the early hours of Wednesday and turned it into a huge flaming torch in minutes.

The singer, who owns a house in the borough of Kensington and Chelsea where the fire took place, wasn't the only star to offer up their support. The UK government also ordered checks at tower blocks that have had or are going through similar renovations as those at Grenfell Tower. Fire swept through a high-rise apartment building in west London early Wednesday, killing an un.

When questioned about residents' worries about fire safety at the block, the council's deputy leader Rock Feilding-Mellen told the BBC: "My understanding is that their concerns were looked at and officers and the TMO (tenant management organisation) made inquiries and felt we had done what was necessary".
