Left-hander Sean Manaea, who is going 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA in his last two starts, takes the pitch Wednesday against the Indians at Progressive Field. Manager Terry Francona wouldn't say if Kluber will be on a pitch count.

Marlins starter Justin Nicolino did not allow a hit, walk or run in three innings but was forced to leave with a 7-0 lead after suffering a contusion on his left index finger.

Kluber said he has to complete "20 to 30 minutes of activation stuff every day" to initiate his pitching routine, though he stressed that it doesn't alter what he is capable of on the mound.

Kluber's last start against Oakland came on July 31, 2016, an 8-0 Cleveland win.

PITTSBURGH - Robbie Ray pitched his first career shutout as Arizona defeated Pittsburgh.

Cleveland Indians' Erik Gonzalez, right, slides safely into home plate as Oakland Athletics catcher Josh Phegley waits in the sixth inning of a baseball game, Thursday, June 1, 2017, in Cleveland.

Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Daniel Mengden delivers in the first inning of a baseball game against the Cleveland Indians, Monday, May 29, 2017, in Cleveland.

CLEVELAND - If an inning or even just one play can explain a season, the A's experienced it Thursday during one ugly mess of a sixth.

The next inning began with pitcher John Axford getting to the first-base bag late on what was ruled a base hit by Gonzalez, Kipnis walked and Lindor drove in one run with a single. Although A's starter Jharel Cotton will be making his first career appearance against the Indians, Cotton has had success pitching during the day.

Davis, presented with his American League championship ring before the game, was 1 for 4 with a third-inning single.

Athletics: RHP Sonny Gray struck out a team season-high 11 over seven innings in a 4-1 win over Miami on May 24. Canha did not start either of the first two games of the Cleveland series.

"Rajai is struggling a little bit, but all the guys we've used at the one and two have", Melvin said.

Oakland committed three errors and fell victim to another 17 strikeouts, adding to their tally of six defensive blunders and 59 strikeouts at the plate over the duration of the four-game set.

The best news for Oakland going into the series finale is the play of infielder Chad Pinder on Wednesday.

Seager hit a two-run homer in the second and doubled home two runs in the third.

MARLINS 7, PHILLIES 2: Giancarlo Stanton hit his third homer since moving into the No. 2 spot in the batting order, a change that has revived visiting Miami, which won its third game in a row. Cotton has given up 3 runs or less in 4 of his last 5 starts, so if he can hold down the Cleveland offense, I think Oakland is worth a look with the big plus money. "His breaking ball was so good and he was crisp right from the get-go".

"I didn't have enough left-handed bats in the lineup against Kluber, so some of those strikeouts are on me", Melvin said. "We'll find a way".
