Hodgkinson was 66 years old, according to multiple sources online.

Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., tweeted, "We will play for charity, but also for the victims & the heroic officers who took down the shooter".

"The Democrats have let you down big-league", he told an audience at a Milwaukee airport on a trip that was part of what the White House planned as "workforce development week".

Police said the shooting suspect was in custody and "not a threat". They put their lives on the line every day to protect us and we must always do not forget to thank them for their service and sacrifice in the line of duty.

Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Ala., said several other people also were hit, including two law enforcement officers.

"I am sickened by this despicable act", the Vermont senator said. Despite the shooting, Doyle tells Channel 11 that he doesn't want a private security detail following him around.

Capitol Police officers were already at the field when the shooting started thanks to Scalise, who has a security detail because he's in the line of succession to the White House. "My colleagues were targeted today by someone that wanted to kill them".

Trump says the wounded congressman, Republican Steve Scalise of Louisiana, is in stable condition.

President Donald Trump made an evening visit to the hospital where a critically wounded U.S. congressman is receiving treatment Wednesday. "He is grateful for the fearless actions of U.S. Capitol Police, first responders, and colleagues", his office said in a previous statement at 2:30 p.m. EST.

Duncan said that as he left the field the man who would later open fire approached him in the parking lot. Gunshots hit the YMCA's windows, and the building was shut down and the block cordoned off, NPR's Tom Bowman reports from the scene.

Barton said the shooting lasted 5-10 minutes, and there were dozens or more of shots fired.

Colleagues said Scalise had been fielding balls at second base at a local park in Alexandria, just across the Potomac River from the nation's capital, as the Republicans practiced for their annual game with Democrats.

"At the same time I hear Steve Scalise over near second base scream", Brooks added. The assailant, who had nursed grievances against President Donald Trump and the GOP, fought a gun battle with police before he, too, was shot and later died.

Rep. Steve Pearce of New Mexico, who was at the practice but unharmed, tweeted prayers for the victims.

Scalise, a congressional staffer for Texas Rep. Roger Williams and two Capitol Police officers were shot.

As news of the shooting in Alexandria, Virginia spread, an outpouring of support followed as members of Congress shared their condolences, support and disbelief on social media.

"We just stayed where we were and stayed down", he said.

Congresswoman Jackie Walorski released a statement as well saying "My staff and I are safe and praying for Whip Steve Scalise and the others who were injured this morning".

Trump canceled his scheduled speech at the Department of Labor on Wednesday afternoon (and Vice President Mike Pence canceled a morning speech at the National Association of Home Builders in Washington) as Trump, for the first time as president, was thrust into the role of unifier-in-chief.
