US President Donald Trump had on Friday denied he tried to interfere with an FBI investigation, effectively accusing James Comey, the FBI's former director, of lying under oath to Congress.

Conway also said Comey's testimony showed President Donald Trump was not under investigation. "There's no ambiguity in it", Trump Jr. said on Fox News" "Justice with Judge Jeanine".

The US democratic system features a built-in presumption that the occupant of the highest office will hold himself to the highest standards of conduct.

Said attorney Marc Kasowitz in a statement following Comey's under-oath Senate testimony, "T$3 he President never, in form or substance, directed or suggested that Mr. Comey stop investigating anyone, including suggesting that that Mr. Comey 'let Flynn go.'" Trump has offered his own denial as well, telling a reporter on Friday that "I didn't say that", though also hastily hedging that "there would be nothing wrong if I did say it according to everybody that I've read today".

Comey said he believed Trump's statement meant the president had directed him to drop an FBI investigation into Flynn's alleged ties to Russian Federation.

"My common sense told me, he's looking to get something in exchange for granting my request to stay in the job, ' said Mr Comey". Trump issued his warning online on May 12, three days after Comey was sacked and four days before the newspaper reported on the information in the memo, which was recounted by Comey associates.

Trump cited that, as his outside lawyer has as well, as evidence that there was no collusion or obstruction in his administration. "That was an excuse by the Democrats, who lost an election that some people think they shouldn't have lost". But we were very, very happy and, frankly, James Comey confirmed a lot of what I said. Comey also said he thinks Trump fired him over the Russian Federation investigation.

"I hardly know [Comey]".

United States correspondent Richard Arnold told Mike Hosking Trump rejects those allegations. "Who would do that?"

The president had previewed his attacks against Mr Comey in an early-morning tweet that broke his previous day's silence on his favorite social media megaphone. Pressed on the issue, he insisted he wasn't "hinting anything", before adding, "Oh you're going to be very disappointed when you hear the answer, don't worry".

Apart from the questions about Comey, the two leaders pledged cooperation against terrorism amid a deepening diplomatic crisis in the Middle East.

Facing turmoil about investigations over his campaign's ties to Russia, Trump plans to bring more Americans into the economy by having them start working as apprentices.

A poll released just days after Trump defeated Democrat Hillary Clinton found a yawning chasm between their supporters when it came to even finding common ground on the biggest problems facing the nation.
