Mexico for much of the match took possession and control and was the team that took the game to Portugal from the forefront.

"We wanted to win, of course, but we have to be satisfied with this result against the European champions", Chicharito said. "We lacked a little bit of efficiency".

Portugal led but Mexico fought back to earn a point in their Confederations Cup Group A opener.

Spanish sports daily Marca wrote yesterday that Real coach Zinedine Zidane interrupted his holiday to call Ronaldo in a bid to persuade his unsettled star not to quit the club.

The result leaves both sides tied for second place in Group A, behind hosts Russian Federation who top the group after beating New Zealand 2-0 on Saturday in St. Petersburg.

May now be 32 but still remains the key man, as highlighted by the fact he has scored or provided an assist in his last seven matches for Portugal.

Pepe thought he'd opened the scoring for Portugal on the rebound after Cristiano Ronaldo had crashed a shot against the bar with a sensational dipping volley - but the goal was chalked off for offside after the referee consulted a video replay, a system being trialed at the tournament.

Play continued for about 10 seconds until the ball got to Nani and he scored from inside the area after a shot by Ronaldo hit the crossbar.

However, Portugal, and Ronaldo, were not to be denied. A few minutes later, Mexico had a chance to take the lead right before halftime, but Hernandez sailed the ball over the goal frame.

Mexico: Ochoa - Salcedo (Araujo, 67), D. Reyes, Moreno, Layun Herrera, John.

But Mexico responded with Hernandez testing Portugal keeper Rui Patricio, before putting his side level.

Soares' goal had to be confirmed by video review but it eventually stood.

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Raphael Guerreiro failed to deal with a cross into the box and Carlos Vela teed up Hernandez, who met the cross with a diving header. Patrício at this point his team to help could not.

But with the 90 minutes up, Mexican defender Moreno rose highest from the final corner of the game to head in the equaliser.
