The dogs that tested positive were either at a Perry, Georgia dog show from May 19-21 or the Deland, Florida dog show the following weekend.

There are 2 types of canine flu, H3N8 which scientists believe jumped from horses to dogs, and H3N2, which is believed to have derived from avian influenza and has reportedly infected some cats.

The UF College of Veterinary Medicine said in a statement that veterinarians in central and north Florida are treating many dogs that are suspected to have dog flu, and that all dogs being treated are in stable condition. - A West Palm Beach Animal Rescue is offering a vaccine to combat dog flu cases in Florida. Fortunately, the mortality rate is low.

"Now is the time for veterinarians and dog owners to really consider getting their dogs vaccinated against this virus", said Crawford.

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services confirmed multiple cases of the H3N2 dog flu this week. "It's called the H3N2 virus". It was first detected in South Korea in 2008.

Thousands of dogs have been severely sickened by the canine flu nationwide, and although it's not usually fatal, some dogs have died, including six in the Chicago area. Some dogs have severe infections, which can lead to life-threatening pneumonia.

It's highly contagious, but more likely to spread in dogs housed together in shelters, kennels, or daycare, or those at group events.

The CDC urges owners of dogs showing symptoms of the disease, like coughing, to not expose their dog to other dogs.
