A few days after he suddenly dismissed Comey in May, amid the FBI's investigation into links between his campaign and Russian officials, Trump taunted the former FBI director on Twitter by suggesting that he had recorded their conversations.

"Lordy, I hope there are tapes", Comey said of his conversations with Trump.

He branded the president a liar and said Trump urged him to abandon the investigation into the former national security adviser Michael Flynn, an allegation Trump has denied.

Donald Trump, Jr., son of President Donald Trump, attends the 139th White House Easter Egg Roll on the South Lawn of the White House on April 17, 2017. You suggested he didn't tell the truth in everything he said.

Q So he lied about that?
When I hear the Flynn comments, you know my father a long time, when he tells you to do something, guess what, there is no ambiguity in it.

It's hard to say for sure, but for now we could go with Rep. Eric Swalwell's theory that Trump's press conference wasn't meant to clear anything up, but was instead merely a "clownish performance by a reality show star".

In a television interview on Saturday night though, Donald Trump Jr. appeared to directly contradict his father's denial.

Lee said that even if Comey's testimony is true, "I don't see that that amounts to obstruction".

In May, Trump fired Comey over what he believed was poor handling of the investigation into the Hillary Clinton private server and email scandal. However, many believe that the decision is connected with the probe into alleged ties of Trump's campaign team to Russian Federation, as Comey reportedly was seeking funding to extend the bureau's inquiry.

Trump Jr.'s appearance highlights a major legal risk for President Trump, who is now insisting that Comey committed perjury in his testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee. Mueller will likely want to talk to people around Trump and Comey to find out if they were told about their meetings. "There's no, "Hey, I'm hoping".

Trump has expressed a willingness to repeat his version of the events under oath.
