Donald Trump torched on Twitter after insulting Nancy Pelosi and 'Cryin' Chuck

"I think you'd have to be an idiot to think we could win the House with Pelosi at the top", Rep. Filemon Vela, D-Texas, told Politico.

As NBC News reported, Republican Karen Handel, who defeated Ossoff, even ran an ad in Spanish attacking Pelosi, while an outside group aired another featuring San Franciscans thanking Ossoff for his campaign.

Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) called for newer, younger leadership in the party and said the Democrats' "brand is worse than Trump" during an interview this week with The New York Times.

Here's a huge reason Nancy Pelosi maintains her iron grip on House Democrats, even after another bruising - and in many party circles embarrassing - election loss: Her ability to raise lots and lots of money.

But he said he wouldn't take his foot off the gas after the Georgia win: "We always run like we're behind".

In the Georgia election, Republicans used a tactic they've been using for years, setting up the liberal Pelosi as a villain who needs to be stopped.

"Right now, what I'm pushing for is a conversation within the caucus", Rice said. His 2015-16 giving was well behind Pelosi previous year, at $592,500. When it comes to her detractors, Pelosi said "my decision about how long I stay is not up to them".

That reality was the subtext for Pelosi's taunting remarks Thursday in which she cast her Democratic critics as hungry for attention rather than serious about ousting her. "I think that people were in shock" after hearing a report from Pelosi and the head of the House campaign arm that Democrats lost, but were doing better in contests in other GOP districts.

After Hillary Clinton's loss to Donald Trump last November, a significant crop of Democratic lawmakers attempted to vote her out. Pelosi acknowledged the attacks but added, "I think I'm worth the trouble".

A successful Republican strategy in Tuesday's race for Georgia's 6th Congressional District included promoting a relentlessly anti-Pelosi message to drive out the conservative base.

However, Pelosi's role in the Obamacare debacle of 2009-10 helped provoke the Tea Party wave, sending her party to historic defeat and costing her the Speaker's gavel. While speaking to the Iowa crowd, Trump called on Democrats to work with Republicans in Congress, before insulting them as "obstructionists".

Democrats hold 193 seats and need to gain 24 to be in the majority. To borrow one of the favorite quotations from one of Pelosi's least favorite late Democratic colleagues, "Beam me up, Scotty!"

But prescriptions for how the Democrats should move forward varied.

She continues to command a great degree of loyalty from many House Democrats, and allies dismissed the idea that her position was in any kind of jeopardy. But their reluctance left Ossoff running on a milquetoast message, allowing Republicans to drive the narrative that he would be a Pelosi lackey on Capitol Hill. And running simply on an anti-Trump message - like Clinton tried and failed previous year - wouldn't work for Democrats in 2018 either, no matter how mired in scandal and controversy over Russian Federation the White House may be.
