USA lawmakers returned to regular business on Thursday and prepared to play their annual charity baseball game, one day after a man who had expressed anger toward President Donald Trump opened fire on Republican legislators, leaving a senior congressman in critical condition.

Steve Scalise was upgraded from "critical" to "serious condition" Saturday and continued to show signs of improvement after he was wounded in a shooting at a Republican baseball practice outside Washington.

He has undergone several surgeries and will require more, MedStar Washington hospital reported Thursday night.

President Donald Trump thanked the members of Congress and others for supporting the Congressional Baseball Game with a recorded statement played at Nationals Park Thursday night. "The Scalise family greatly appreciates the outpouring of thoughts and prayers". Lobbyist Matt Mika was shot multiple times and critically injured and remained hospitalized. Every year, with a few interruptions, Senate and House members of each party solidify friendships off the floor and on the field. "We will provide periodic updates".

The announcement comes as the congressional charity baseball game, for which Scalise and his Republican colleagues had been practicing at the time of the shooting, continues as planned. Vice President Mike Pence earlier on Thursday said he visited MedStar Washington Hospital Center, where Scalise was being treated.

Since then, the lawmaker has undergone multiple surgeries and procedures to stop the bleeding and fix bone.

Dr. Jack Sava gave details of Scalise's injuries, his condition at the time of arrival and and his chances of recovery Friday afternoon.

Nonetheless, Sava said, "We fully expect him to be able to walk" and "hopefully run".

Law enforcement officials identified the shooter as 66-year-old James Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois, who later died from injuries sustained during a shootout with police on the scene.

The Louisiana Republican was shot in the hip Wednesday morning in the baseball practice shooting by an IL man with grudges against President Donald Trump and the GOP.

"We also praise special agents Crystal Griner and David Bailey of the Capitol Police for their heroic deeds that saved so many lives".

The Congressional Baseball Game Facebook page will also carry a live stream of the game and it will be broadcast on C-SPAN, a spokeswoman for the Congressional Baseball Game said.

The question now is can the unity last after the Democrats routed the Republicans by a final score of 11-2.

Bailey was spotted Friday in the Capitol, on crutches and out of uniform, accepting congratulations from fellow officers.
