Nominees for best male hip hop artist are Kendrick Lamar, Drake, J. Cole, Chance the Rapper, Future and Big Sean.

Former First Lady Michelle Obama recorded a video message honoring Chance the Rapper for the 2017 Black Entertainment Television (BET) Awards.

"I had plans originally to try to tell the world and everybody watching how to make it a better place", he said in his remarks.

On stage, Chance said that God was "putting this enormous pressure on me to see how I would react".

The rapper said he didn't prepare a speech. He also made a public commitment to better himself as a person and a father.

"I was inspired to study my skills and work on my connection with my neighborhood", he said.

Bruno Mars accepts the award for best male R&B/pop artist at the BET Awards at the Microsoft Theater on Sunday, June 25, 2017, in Los Angeles. Chance the Rapper, and his mom, danced during the long set; as did Queen Latifah, Cardi B., "Stranger Things" actor Caleb McLaughlin and "black-ish" actress Yara Shahidi, who won the YoungStars award.

The hip-hop trio Migos won the night's first honor - the best group award.

Ma took home the award at the end of the four-hour award show in one of the night's most anticipated award announcements.

Ma, who returned from jail in 2014, thanked God and named two correctional facilities in her speech and told others that they can come back.

"30-plus years in the music industry will chew you up and spit you out, but all six of us are standing onstage right now", said Ricky Bell before the group performed a medley of their hits. During her speech, Remy Ma took a slight dig at Minaj, a Queens native, by saying: "And, yeah, that crown is coming back to the Bronx".

In March, Ma released the diss track "Shether", which was hostile toward Minaj and earned praised from critics and rap fans.

Called "our forever First Lady" by BET CEO Debra Lee from the stage tonight at downtown LA's Microsoft Theatre, the former FLOTUS via video added, "with these passionate efforts, Chance is showing our young people that they matter, that they have something inside them that is worthy of being expressed and that they have so much to contribute to their communities and to our country".

Ma ended by quoting from one of her songs with Fat Joe and walked away with the award high in her hands. New Edition, who had success with their BET biopic this year, will receive the lifetime achievement award.
