England set for a tougher test against NZ

An impressive 81-run stand for the second wicket between Alex Hales and Joe Root helped England seal their berth in the semifinals of the Champions Trophy, comfortably beating New Zealand by 87 runs in Cardiff on Tuesday. I really hope England do what Eoin Morgan says they'll do and back their man.

New Zealand can still reach the semi-finals if they beat Bangladesh in their final game and Australia lose to England.

Guptill (26) combined with Luke Ronchi (65 off 43) to kickstart the New Zealand innings against Australia last week, with skipper Kane Williamson's 97-ball 100 anchoring the Black Caps to 291 off 45 overs.

Both teams have a point each after losing to England, while their respective matches with Australia ended in rain-induced no results.

"I think that's one-day cricket - you have to be prepared to go round the park now and again and cherish these days when you come off with decent figures", the 26-year-old Ball said.

England conclude their group-stage fixtures with a showdown with world champions Australia at Edgbaston on Saturday, a crucial game for their opponents as their qualification remains in the balance.

The New Zealand side meet Bangladesh in Cardiff on Friday night (NZ time) in their final pool match of the one-day cricket global competition, with England and Australia facing off in the pool's other fixture.

"England outplayed us in all areas today - credit to them for the way they went about their business, especially with ball in hand".

"The persistence and mind set the guys showed kept us in good stead, so when we eventually took a wicket we took two, and could build on that".

After this victory England became the first side to qualify for the semi-finals.

"The dominant factor in New Zealand was that they had that confidence, whereas we didn't". "I thought we would have got more".

To add insult to injury the Blackcaps were also fined for a slow over-rate, Williamson docked 40 per cent of his match fee and the rest of the team 20 per cent each. They seem to produce limited overs cricketers at will.

Williamson fell to a ball from Wood that leapt at him from short of a length to take his glove for caught-behind.
